In ‘58 Steinbeck received the letter from his eldest son, Thom, who was attending boarding school. In it, the teenager spoke of Susan, a young girl with whom he believed he had fallen in love.
Steinbeck replied the same day. His beautiful letter of advice can be enjoyed below.I hope every boy and girl can hear his advice.
It’s true
and honest.

Jet Setter
I’m not sure what the phrase jet setter really means, but I have a pretty good guess. Went to LA this past weekend, now Chicago tomorrow. Something makes me think that a jet setter travels on a jet. Crazy guess, right!?!
I’m exhausted and somehow still feel jet lagged, so I might as well dive into a state of confusion and leave the time zone I’m slowly getting adjusted to.

A failure is a project that doesn’t work, an initiative that teaches you something at the same time the outcome doesn’t move you directly closer to your goal.
A mistake is either a failure repeated, doing something for the second time when you should have known better, or a misguided attempt…

Today was my first day
as a reporter for FORTUNE Magazine and I couldn’t be happier.
My week
has been a lot about writing, writing, and more writing.
Right as my week was beginning, I decided to go out to lunch and see The Help with my grandma, which we both really enjoyed. Lucille is the most beautiful, easy going person I know. As long as the movie theater seats were comfortable, which she obviously commented on them being, then she could have sat there for hours and hours. She loved...

Part of the truth
Sorry that my blogging habits have gone down tremendously. I guess I used to have all of the time in the world to write about what I wanted to be writing one day, where I wanted to be traveling, and what I wanted to be doing once I became an “adult,” or whatever that means. I don’t feel like an adult, so does that still make me a kid? I feel that there is so much I want to say...

How To Land Your Kid In Therapy
I recently read an article in The Atlantic Monthly that only confirmed my thoughts about why so many kids I grew up with are beyond screwed up today. In this months issue, Lori Gottlieb, who is a psychotherapist, tries to answer the question of why so many adults in their 20s and early 30s, who came from loving, happy households, became depressed and anxious as they grew up. She discovered that...

I can tell if I like someone in less than 30...
I agree that sometimes it can take longer. First impressions are not always accurate, but most of the time, they are. It’s chemistry. It literally is saying hello and the feeling you get when someone says it back. It’s not checking the boxes on a dating website of what color hair you want your future husband to have, or if he is a republican, or god forbid a felon.
In this weeks New...

The most crazy month of my life
I know I’ve become an awful blogger, but since becoming a college graduate I have SO busy (which is definitely a good thing, right?) and I’m now trying to process it all. You know, process the fact that I’m now an adult.
I’ll be back soon, I promise. With a lot of good news.

Yesterday there was a school shooting
at Martinsville West Middle School. I went out and reported on it. Here is the story.
I overheard someone today
telling her friend that the second her parents met they knew they were going to get married. They have been married for 30 years. I frequently hear stories like this. How some people lock eyes with one another and they just feel it. That it you can’t describe. That it that makes you never walk away.
Some couples have been together forever and grew to love each other over time. Maybe they...
I'm graduating from college in six weeks. What?!
This entire week
I met with 13 editors from magazines. While my friends are soaking in rays down in Mexico or some little island or town that I most likely can’t even pronounce, I have been having numerous informal interviews for post graduation. (I’m done in 7 weeks. It sounds absolutely frightening when I write it out more than actually saying it out loud.)
From corner offices looking out onto the...
